Happy Monday Morning!!

Hello everyone!

We had another fabulous week and I can feel we are starting to get into a routine!!  I wanted to remind every one of a few things.  Please make sure that when your child has a book to read for homework that you return both the book and the bookmark.  I use the books every year and need to keep them.  Also, great job completing and returning math homework.  We will be finishing up the first topic in math today and taking the test tomorrow.  I have been very impressed with how well the kids are doing!  It is a great way to start off the year.  One thing I forgot to mention at parent night is to please go over papers sent home daily.  It is important for not only you, but your child, to see the comments I write.  I will often pull a student aside to show them certain things, but it is also great feedback if you discuss their papers with them.  I forgot to send a reminder home on Friday about snack.  Thank you again to all of the parents who generously donated snacks for the first two weeks of school!!!  Starting today, your child will need to bring his/her own snack if they would like one.

FYI:  We have scheduled our fall field trip.  It will be October 21 at a farm.  I do not know the details, but the farm is located by Station Camp H.S.  More details will be coming home in a few weeks.

Have a WONDERFUL week!!!!

First Week

We had a great first week of school.  The class has done great at taking their red folders home and returning them the next day.  Thank you parents for looking through the folders and returning anything that is important.  We had a busy week learning first grade procedures and doing work.  This coming week will be a week of many new things.  On Monday we will be starting our reading series (which includes going to reading stations), spelling words, and our new math series.  It is going to be a busy week and a learning process for all of us.   I am excited to see all of the parents Monday night at 7:00.  I will be going over most of the curriculum we will be studying this year, plus going over several classroom policies.  I also plan to go over the Accelerated Reading program, which I plan to start in the next two weeks.  All students have tested on the Star Reading test, which will give them a reading level.  They will start checking out library books in these levels and taking A.R. tests in class.

Keep an eye out on Monday for our first reading homeowork and your child’s spelling words for the week!!!  See you Monday night!

The Start of a New Year!!!

Welcome to our class website!!!  Today was a great registration day and I was so glad to meet everyone.  I am looking forward to an outstanding year.  A reminder to return all forms that needed to be filled out or signed by Tuesday, August 9.  If you have any questions about anything, please let me know.  Also, don’t forget Monday to wear your favorite color to school!  If you cannot remember each color day, it will be written on a calendar in your child’s take home folder.  Make sure to check that out Monday afternoon.  I will be using this website to update you on things happening in class and to share some of the great learning experiences that we will have this year.  I will talk more about this at Parent Night on Aug. 15.  I hope to see everyone there!

Field Trip

Last week I sent home the information about the first grade field trip.  On the form it said please return by April 20.  I would LOVE to have all permission slips and money turned in sooner than that.  If you would please send everything in by the end of the this week.

Today we start our last Unit in reading!  It is super exciting!!!  This is always a sign that school is getting closer to being done.  We will read a new story and have spelling words the next six weeks.  It is very important to not stop working with your child at home.   I know as the weather gets nicer and more and more kids have ball games, etc., it gets harder.

Family Tradition/Treasure Projects

Oh, what a great week it was!  It has been so much fun seeing the objects, tasting the food, and hearing the stories of your family traditions.  It is so interesting and fun to learn more about each other!

I hope everyone is enjoying spring break and is getting some rest.  When we return to school on March 21 we will be full steam ahead for 9 weeks!  Between Christmas and snow days and now spring break, I am not sure how we will do it! =) But, we have many more things to learn and will have some fun things mixed in!

Enjoy these photos of our projects!

Reminders and Updates!

Phizz-Whizzing Collection

I hope everyone received a phone call or an email announcing that we will be having class on February 21 and we will be having no parent-teacher conferences and instead have class on March 10.  Since we will have class that Thursday, I am moving our A.R. goals to March 9.  So, your child will have until the 9th to meet their goal and we will be celebrating on March 10.  This is a very exciting one because we have been reading the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  We will be done by March 10, so our celebration will use the theme of the book.  It is fun and the kids are LOVING the book!

Valentine’s Day

We had a great day on Monday!  It was a busy day trying to get caught up from the days missed from the week before, but we were still able to fit in some Valentine fun!  We used valentine conversation hearts to do our math for the day.  We counted, sorted, graphed, and even taste tested ( I think everyone’s favorite part!).  In the afternoon we had some treats (THANK YOU ROOM MOMS!) and exchanged cards.  Here are a few pictures!  Enjoy

A Busy Month

Don't ask me how I made the first stack

February is full of different holidays and activities.  One of the important topics that we will be studying this week and next week is counting coins.  We are started this earlier in January, but with the snow days, it was has been “hit or miss” with teaching it.  So, since we have been back, it has been a HUGE focus for our days!  Please work with your child at home.  I find that using real coins helps the most.  Have your child use different coins to make specific amounts that you tell them.  They need to be able to identify all four coins and tell you the value.  We will not use more than one quarter at a time.  Please keep practicing, because I will be assessing each student next week while using real coins.

In February we will also be doing units on dental health, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, and of course do some fun Valentine activities.  I will be sending home information later this month on the specifics for exchanging Valentine cards on Valentine’s Day.

Another project that was started in January and we will finish in February is Celebrate Literacy.  This is where each student will write a story and we will publish them into a book.  They will sew the pages and illustrate the pictures.  This is a very fun project, but also one that is extremely involved.  We are using our computer time to work on the stories and once they are edited and printed, we will start drawing and sewing.  Sometime in the spring there will be an Author’s Night where each student who makes a book will be honored.  Keep an eye out for that this spring.

December

What a month we had in December!!  We had our first snow days, which was exciting for everyone.  We also had our first A.R. Celebration.  We had a great day celebrating how hard everyone worked for 9 weeks.  I think it is a huge accomplishment for the entire class to meet the goals set!  It shows how hard-working the kids are.  The kids looked adorable in their pajamas and had fun “riding” the Polar Express all day.  Everyone even remembered to bring their ticket so that they could get on board.  Everyone needs a new box of crayons at this time of year, so as a reward everyone got a new box of crayons.  Those that doubled, tripled, quadrupled, and even septupled (I think that is how you would say it!) received an even BIGGER box of crayons!

Here are few pictures to show the fun we had!
